Vindolanda fort and museum

Vindolanda combines excavated Roman remains with a museum south of Hadrian's Wall on the Stanegate road. The earliest Roman installation here predates the wall. Buildings, baths and settlement remains sit alongside reconstructed features identified as replicas, while the museum adds objects that reveal details of life on the frontier.

The Roman Army Museum is a separate site near Magna, about seven miles away. Plan travel between them if both are on your list. The operator's 2026 visitor information suggests at least two hours at Vindolanda and around an hour and a half at the Roman Army Museum. These are planning suggestions, leaving you free to choose your own pace.

Writing tablets and excavation

Vindolanda is known for handwritten wooden tablets preserved in oxygen-poor layers. They provide glimpses of military and private life, adding individual voices to the physical remains outside. The museum displays a selection of finds, including wooden objects. Exhibits complement the site itself and help explain how archaeologists interpret the frontier community.

The operator describes annual excavations from April to September. If you want to see excavation activity, check information for your date; activity on a particular day can vary. You can still use the outdoor remains and museum to explore the history of the settlement and the people connected with it.

For a wider introduction to frontier control and settlements, read our Hadrian's Wall history guide. Housesteads offers another perspective on Roman fort remains and a civilian settlement. Its museum appears in the comparison image here, separate from the museum at Vindolanda.

Roman Army Museum

The Roman Army Museum near Greenhead focuses on the Roman army through three galleries, an HD film and a Roman classroom with a holographic teacher. The film lasts around twenty minutes. This indoor experience complements the fort and excavation landscape at Vindolanda, making the two sites useful companions for visitors interested in different aspects of Roman life.

The museum has its own free car park for museum visitors. Gallery access is via ramps, and the cinema and classroom have wheelchair spaces; access to the outdoor Magna area is limited. Check individual access needs before travelling. The nearest railway station for the museum is Haltwhistle, while Bardon Mill is the nearest station to Vindolanda.

The SAVER ticket covers one visit to each attraction, and the visits do not have to take place on the same day. Online tickets are valid for twelve months from purchase until redemption, according to the operator's 2026 information. That validity is a booking condition, not the time needed to visit. Check current ticket terms and prices before purchase.

Opening, travel and guided visits

The published opening information consulted in September 2026 listed both sites from 09:30 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:00. Check the hours for your actual date before travelling. At both sites, only assistance dogs are admitted. Plan any visit with a dog around those separate access rules.

By road, follow signs to Vindolanda from the A69 near Bardon Mill or from the B6318. Line 122 serves Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum area; check the timetable for your date and your return. Our travel guide covers the wider journey from Haltwhistle and Newcastle.

A private trip from Windermere includes transport, English onboard commentary and entry to both museums. A day trip from Edinburgh includes the Vindolanda and Roman Army Museum admission, with Housesteads as an alternative when Vindolanda is closed. A five-day trip from Edinburgh is a longer way to incorporate the sites. Compare departure points and inclusions on the tours page.
