How to get to Hadrian's Wall via Haltwhistle

How to get to Hadrian's Wall is easiest to answer by choosing the site or walking section first. Haltwhistle is on the railway corridor between Newcastle, Hexham and Carlisle. From the town, plan a separate onward journey to the wall and its Roman sites. The wall bus, shown as route 122 in online journey planners, is one option for reaching stops along the corridor.

If arriving at Newcastle Airport, take the Metro to Newcastle Central Station and change to a train towards Haltwhistle. Allow time to make the connection and check both services for your travel date. By road, the A69 and B6318 provide approaches to the sites, with signed local turns. The accommodation guide compares bases for rail and walking itineraries.

Decide how you will return before starting a walk. The Hadrian's Wall Path guide explains the terrain, while tours and visits offers alternatives for exploring the area. Public transport and site opening times should be checked separately for the date you choose.

Train to Haltwhistle

Haltwhistle appears on Northern's N4 route between Newcastle and Carlisle via Hexham. Check the timetable for your date and direction, especially when connecting with a flight or planning a return after a visit. A Sunday example in the timetable valid from 4 October to 12 December 2026 leaves Newcastle at 10:04 and reaches Haltwhistle at 11:11. It is one example, so check the timetable for your date.

At Haltwhistle station, the footbridge has steps. Step free access to the platforms is possible by a route using the road. If that matters to your journey, check the station arrangements and allow time for the change between platforms. Also check the onward journey from the station to your accommodation or attraction before booking.

Taxi and transfer from Newcastle Airport (NCL)

Newcastle Airport has a Metro station. The airport operator gives about 25 minutes to Newcastle city centre, including Central Station; the train connection and any waiting time are additional. Check the Metro and rail journey together so that your arrival time leaves room to change.

A taxi or prearranged transfer is another way to organise an onward journey. Ask the operator for a quote, the pickup arrangements and the destination before booking. If your destination is outside Haltwhistle itself, give the exact address rather than only the name of the town. Compare the full journey with the Metro and train option according to your luggage, arrival time and plans.

Car hire and parking

A hire car can help when your itinerary combines several sites with different opening hours. Hexham is an option to consider for car hire; check the collection arrangements and terms for your dates. On the road, use the A69 or B6318 as appropriate and follow the local signs to your destination.

Parking arrangements differ. National park car parks charge for parking, while the Roman Army Museum has its own free car park for museum visitors. The Sill and Walltown Quarry allow overnight parking but do not permit camping or sleeping in a motorhome. Housesteads, Steel Rigg and Cawfields do not allow overnight parking. Check the conditions at the particular car park you choose.

Wall bus and visits between sites

The service previously known as AD122 is displayed as route 122 in online journey planners since 19 July 2026. Check the current timetable and stops for the day of travel rather than relying on a general seasonal pattern. Plan the return journey at the same time as the outward trip, particularly if a walk ends at a different stop.

Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum are separate locations. Vindolanda can be reached from the A69 near Bardon Mill or from the B6318 by following the signs. The Roman Army Museum is near Greenhead. Consult the visitor guide for the two sites, and the Housesteads guide for the steep approach from its lower car park.

For a walking day, take appropriate footwear, waterproof layers, food and water, plus a map and compass. Check the forecast and local access information before departure, and tell someone your route and expected return time. The seasonal guide helps with daylight and weather planning.
