Birdoswald Roman Fort and the wall
Birdoswald is a Roman fort near Gilsland in Cumbria, on the line of Hadrian's Wall. It gives visitors a place to explore the remains of the frontier and to consider how the fort relates to the surrounding wall landscape. A visit can be a stop in its own right or part of a broader journey through Roman Britain.
Admission to the fort and a walk on the Hadrian's Wall Path should be planned separately. Decide how much time to spend at the site before choosing a route, and check the conditions and return transport for that route. The central frontier also has Housesteads Roman Fort, where the steep access from the lower car park needs its own planning.
For context, the wall was part of a frontier system that included forts, roads, ditches and civilian settlements. Our history guide explains that wider setting. Visiting more than one site allows time to consider different parts of the frontier, but it is sensible to check each site's timetable independently.

Tickets and membership
The entry ticket shown here includes admission to Birdoswald. Parking is an additional consideration, so check the arrangements when selecting your ticket and planning your arrival. English Heritage members receive free entry; bring your membership card and check the conditions that apply to your visit.
Prices vary with the date and booking method. English Heritage offers a saving for advance online booking made by midnight on the preceding day, and tickets can also be bought on the day. Its published 2026 and 2027 prospectus lists several admission categories. Check the calendar for the actual day rather than relying on a single figure for every visit.
Seasonal opening times
The opening pattern changes through the year. The published 2026 schedule gives daily opening during the main spring and summer period, followed by a shorter autumn day and weekend opening for part of the winter. Birdoswald is listed as closed from 24 to 26 December 2026. Before travelling, check the current calendar for your specific date, including the last admission time.
A seasonal timetable matters especially if the fort is one stop on a longer itinerary. A wall walk and the paid fort visit are different activities, and opening hours for the fort should not be assumed to describe every surrounding path. Leave enough room in the day for the route back as well as for the site itself.
Parking and onward travel
The operator's family guide lists a daily parking charge, with parking free for English Heritage members, and identifies accessible parking spaces. Check the current arrangements before setting out. If travelling without a car, check a suitable connection to Birdoswald rather than assuming the route 122 wall bus stops at the fort.
For a walk, choose a distance that fits your experience and the available daylight. Conditions underfoot can be wet and muddy, and stretches of the trail include steep climbs and descents. Carry suitable footwear, check the weather, take a map and know how you will return. The getting there guide covers the wider Haltwhistle area.
Another day could include Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum, two separate locations with their own visitor arrangements. Compare their opening information and travel between the sites before combining them with Birdoswald. Spreading the visits out leaves more time to understand the remains at each place.
